COLLECTION OF PRAYERS

Prayer

The Prayers offered here are not meant to be used in place of your own, personal prayers. They are merely a resource to aid in prayer. Many people feel that they would like to pray, but they don't feel like they really know how, or are afraid they are doing it wrong. Other people want to pray, but they don't know how to start. And then there are others who feel confident in their ability to pray, but like to meditate on other prayers or use other prayers as a guide for their own.

The prayers which follow are those that many people have found inspiring and useful. They are offered to supplement and nourish your prayer life, not to replace it.

(I am more than happy to receive any prayers that you may come across, or that are particular favorites of yours, so that I can add them to this list.)

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

[For thine is the kingdom
the power and the glory, forever.]
Amen

DOXOLOGY

Glory be to the Father
and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen

ACT OF CONTRITION

Merciful God,
I confess to you that I have sinned in what I have done
and in what I have failed to do.
I have tried to hide from you
and live according to my own standards.
I have lived for myself.
I have turned away from the needs of others.
I have ignored the pain of the world in the pursuit of my own pleasure.
In your mercy forgive what I have been,
change who I am,
and direct who I will become.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer Upon Waking

I rise in the name of my Lord Jesus Christ
Who redeemed me through His precious blood.
Bless, guide, and protect me, O Lord, from all evil,
Empower me to do all that is good,
And lead me to eternal life.
Amen.

Prayer of St. Ignatius

Take, O Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my whole will.
You have given me all that I am and all that I possess;
I surrender it all to you that you may dispose of it according to your will.
Give me only your love and your grace;
with these I will be rich enough, and will have no more to desire.
Amen.

ACT OF FAITH

O my God,
I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
I believe that your divine Son became a human being and died for our sins,
and that he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I belive these and all the truths that the one, holy catholic church has taught throughout the ages
because it is you who has revealed them.
Amen.

ACT OF HOPE

O my God,
relying on your promises,
I hope that, through the infinite merits of Jesus Christ,
you will grant me pardon of my sins,
and the favor necessary to serve you in this life
and to obtain eternal happiness in the next.
Amen

ACT OF LOVE

O my God,
I love you with my whole heart and above all things,
because you are infinitely good and perfect;
and I love my neighbor as myself for love of you.
Grant that I may love you more and more in this life,
and in the next for all eternity.
Amen

ACT OF SELF-DEDICATION

Take O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my whole will.
You have given me all that I am and all that I possess:
I surrender it all to you to be disposed of according to your will.
Give me only your love and your grace;
with these I will be rich enough,
and will desire nothing more.
Amen

PRAYER BEFORE A DAY’S WORK

Direct, I beg you, O Lord, my actions by your holy inspirations,
and grant that I may carry them out with your gracious assistance,
that every prayer and work of mine may begin always with you,
and through you be happily ended.
Amen.

PRAYER TO KEEP THE PRESENCE OF GOD

Lord God Almighty,
you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day.
Defend us today by your mighty power,
so that we may not fall into any sin,
and that all our words may so proceed
and all our thoughts and actions be so directed
as to be always just in your sight.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

GRACE BEFORE MEALS

Bless us, O Lord, and these gifts you have given us
which we are about to receive from your bounty
through Christ our Lord.
Amen

GRACE AFTER MEALS

We give you thanks, Almighty God,
for the gifts you have given us
in the name of Jesus Christ
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever, world without end.
Amen.

May the souls of the faithfully departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.Amen.

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou among women
And Blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners now
and at the hour of our death.
Amen

PRAYER OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

SERENITY PRAYER (Short Form)

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Amen.

SERENITY PRAYER (Long Form)

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR GOD’S WILL

God,
I offer myself to you–
to build with me and to do with me as you want.
Relieve me of the bondage of self,
that I may better do your will.
Take away my difficulties,
that victory over them may bear witness
to those I would help of your power, your love, and your way of life.
May I do your will always.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR SERVICE

My Creator,
I am now willing that you should have all of me, the good and the bad.
I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character that stands in the way of my usefulness
to you and to others.
Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding.
Amen.

FATIMA PRAYER (Decade Prayer)

O my Jesus,
forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell,
lead all souls to heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
Amen

FATIMA PRAYER (Pardon Prayer)

My God,
I believe,
I adore,
I trust and I love Thee!
I beg pardon for all those that do not believe,
do not adore,
do not trust and do not love Thee.
Amen

Prayer At Night

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake;
watch over us as we sleep,
that awake, we may keep watch with Christ,
and asleep, rest in his peace.

Prayer Before Sleeping

Lord,
give our bodies restful sleep
and let the work we have done today
bear fruit in eternal life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
